SUSANNA HELLER: IN THE STUDIO
Jan 21 – Feb 4, 2023
Susanna (b.1956 – 2021). She was a woman of the city, of history, of structure, of urban movement, the female gaze, and of the weird chunky looming storm to the soft and fluffy clouds. As a young security guard at the MET, she learned that as long as your hands were clasped behind your back you could practically lick the art, and no one would stop you. That is how she wanted the viewer to engage with her work: to become enthralled. Intimately close. To fall right in, and in love. When I look for Susanna now, I find her in the paintings as though she got too close and tumbled into the canvas. She reappears there over and over – a hand! An eye! – Susanna moved through her city the way she moved through the paintings by striding, fingers outstretched, reaching up through the scaffolding to capture the sky.
Susanna Heller: In the Studio surveys 30 years. It’s an archive of Manhattan through thunderstorms and clear skies, 9/11, urban sprawl outwards and upwards, from within the streets and the parks, from across the river to her studio in Brooklyn. It’s her love letter to her home. And this show is our love letter to her.
