The Olga Korper Gallery is pleased to present text, combs, wheels & poems, an exhibition of new work by Canadian artist Lois Andison. Text, combs, wheels & poems is currently on view at the gallery, with a formal opening Thursday, September 10th from 6-9pm for which the artist will be in attendance.
This newest collection of Lois’ work features pieces that were on display over the last year in three simultaneous offsite exhibitions – at the University of Waterloo Art Gallery, the Doris McCarthy Gallery, and the Rodman Hall Art Centre – the three solo exhibitions were titled ‘relay’, and gave an exceptional overview of Lois’ old and new work, creating a temporal dialogue expounded on in essays by Jonathan Shaughnessy, Ann MacDonald, and Ihor Holubizky which will appear in the upcoming ‘relay’ catalogue, available for sale next month.
Known for her kinetic sculptures and video installations, Lois takes us on a journey once again into wit, despair, longing, and redemption, all with poetic humour and grace. Text and literary play feature prominently in this exhibition with neon notifications like coffee, tea or tears, celestial celebrations in moon follower, and even a breakdown of the artist’s own name into an approximation of a textual self-portrait.
Text, combs, wheels & poems also features the startlingly seductive and absurd video installation, threading water, in which a woman swims with an oversized comb in the waves, trying to tame and control them against all odds and possibilities; and nudging marcel, a kinetic sculpture which bows to Marcel Duchamp and the readymade, which once marked a great change in Conceptual art.
Together, these wonderful works supply the viewer with food for thought, nourishment for the soul, and opportunity to laugh, wonder, and reflect. The exhibition will remain on view until September 26th.
