Ron Shuebrook and Frances Thomas in Conversation

The touring exhibition Ron Shuebrook and Frances Thomas in Conversation opened at the Woodstock Art Gallery, Woodstock, Ontario on 21 October 2023 and will continue through 20 January 2024. Curated by Mary Reid, Director/Curator of the Woodstock Art, this two-artist exhibition will travel to other Ontario public galleries as follows:

A substantial, fully illustrated catalogue of the exhibition, with essays by Mary Reid and by Emily McKibbon, Head, Art Gallery of Windsor-Essex, is available from the Woodstock Art Gallery. This exhibition includes recent work by the senior Canadian artists, Frances Thomas and Ron Shuebrook, each of whom has been committed to the critically expressive possibilities of abstraction and non-objective visual artmaking for many decades. Ron Shuebrook, RCA, has been exhibiting since the mid-1960’s, is former president and now Professor Emeritus of OCAD University, and a former president of the RCA and of the Universities Art Association of Canada. His formally rigorous work is included in more than sixty public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Guelph, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. He has been represented by the Olga Korper Gallery, Toronto since 1979.  Shuebrook lives in both Blandford, Nova Scotia and Guelph, Ontario where he has served as Senior Artist-in-Residence, Boarding House Arts since 2013. Frances Thomas is a Barrie-based artist who holds both a BFA and MFA from York University. She has exhibited her gestural abstractions in Barrie, Montreal, Edmonton, Toronto, and New York, and is Curator of the Collection of the Royal Victoria Health Centre, Barrie. She has also taught at Georgian College and been a juror for the Ontario Arts Council. Thomas’s work is included in the collections of MacLaren Art Centre, Bank of Montreal, and York University.
